Holly Leaf Miners

Overview

Holly leaf miners (Phytomyza ilicicola) are small fly larvae that infest holly plants by feeding within leaf tissue. These pests are among the most common problems affecting holly shrubs in ornamental landscapes. Their feeding creates distinctive serpentine mines that reduce the plant’s aesthetic appeal and, in severe cases, may impact overall plant health.

Holly Bud Moths

Leaf miners are unique in that they live and feed between the upper and lower surfaces of leaves. This protected feeding habit makes them less vulnerable to predators and environmental conditions but also more difficult to control.

Holly leaf miners are particularly associated with American holly and other ornamental holly species. Infestations are often most noticeable in late spring and early summer, when mined leaves become discolored and distorted.

Identification

The most recognizable sign of infestation is the presence of winding or blotchy mines within leaves. These mines appear as pale, discolored trails or patches.

Larvae are small, legless maggots found within the leaf. Adult flies are tiny and rarely noticed.

Habitat

These pests are found in landscapes, gardens, and nurseries where holly plants are present. They prefer environments with dense foliage and consistent host availability.

Behavior and Life Cycle

Females lay eggs inside leaves. Larvae hatch and begin feeding internally, creating mines as they grow.

After completing development, larvae pupate within the leaf or drop to the soil. Adults emerge and repeat the cycle.

Typically, one generation occurs per year, although this may vary by region.

Damage and Impact

Leaf mining reduces photosynthesis and weakens plant tissue. While rarely fatal, infestations can significantly reduce ornamental value.

Severely affected leaves may drop prematurely.

Prevention and Control

Removing and destroying infested leaves can help reduce populations. Timing treatments to target adults before egg-laying is most effective.

Maintaining plant health improves resistance.
